This is maybe the most brilliant meta twist in a whodunnit movie ever. He is being facetious in admitting to the housekeeper and arson in a rage. and that he was completely played by her. Ransom's reaction at the end of the movie is purely his realization of what she actually is and what she has done. Marta is absolutely the villain, a criminal mastermind and master manipulator. I've been rewatching and dissecting scene by scene this morning and comparing screenshots of each version of events. they are in fact explicitly reinforced in several scenes throughout the movie. I can't believe the details that conflict with the apparent resolution of Ransom as the bad guy are sloppy overlooks. Every bit of dialog is intentional, every bit of scenery is intentional. This genre is ALL about the little details. In Blanc's terms, this story is actually a 3rd level donut hole, not just a 2nd!įirst off, this was an extremely well researched movie, with oodles of reference to the genre.
